The Great Shift

What is “The Great Shift”? Good question. Our answer is also a simple one.

The World is changing forever; let's talk about it.

How did this even come about? Aditya and I, and our company Mindist Media have not really strayed into the documentary space before. Our original work to date has focused primarily on fiction, and the only non-fiction we have created before has been for our corporate clients. So, why are we doing this?

A few weeks before India (and the world) officially went into lockdown, we had been in development for a feature film - Coco & Nut. I had personally co-written the script with Rahsaan Noor, a celebrated Bengali actor, director, writer and producer (you should check out his movie Bengali Beauty when you get the chance). The film would be our first foray into the Hindi market, so we were quite excited when we had a completed script, and plans for pre-production were well underway.

Then everything changed when the COVID panic overtook the world. Rahsaan and Aditya were both in Mumbai for the pre-production, and I was about to join them. I was visiting a client in Coimbatore at the time. Instead, we took the collective decision for me to return to our base in Bangalore, while they chose to ride out the crisis where they were, to avoid any additional exposure through travel.

The next couple of weeks were a very strange and stressful time for us. We had no way of physically seeing each other for an uncertain amount of time. We lost a few upcoming projects, as did many others in our industry as well as countless people nationwide. Our friend and Co-producer Priyanka had a forced exodus from her Master’s program in Sociology at the London School of Economics, to continue it digitally from Mumbai.

All this got us thinking. We are content creators. It was an odd feeling to be sitting, anxious, unsure of what our next steps should be. It was during the many discussions we had during this period that Aditya finally came up with the idea which would culminate in this: The Great Shift.

We decided to document ourselves, and in turn, other human beings. How they are coping with this period. How are their businesses, industries, families, and perhaps even their sanity, coping during the pandemic? What does this mean for all of us? Where will we all be a few weeks from now? A few months down the line? A year from now? A few years down the road? What does the future hold for us all? Is COVID-19 here to stay? These are just a few of the questions we hope to answer through our investigations for The Great Shift.

Presenting to you, our first episode, in which we ask an eclectic group of entrepreneurs and academics to help us envision what this new world will be like, what we can learn from the past, and what kind of attitude we should keep for the future.

In times of adversity, this is a show about hope. We want to inspire you to see our current global situation as an OPPORTUNITY to fix all that hasn't worked out for us in the past. This is our chance to reset, because as they say, “necessity is the mother of invention”.
